Lone working policy

Sessions and journeys are usually carried out by one worker, without direct supervision from anyone else. This page sets out how Bringing Families Together Ltd keeps that worker, and the family, safe when that is the case.

The risks

Working alone brings particular risks, including:

  • Personal safety during transport or a contact session
  • Managing challenging or unpredictable behaviour without support close by
  • Safeguarding allegations or misunderstandings
  • An emergency arising with no one else immediately on hand
  • Working in an unfamiliar location

Before work

  • Schedules, locations and expected timings are shared with a trusted contact where appropriate
  • A mobile phone is fully charged and accessible at all times
  • Emergency contact details are readily available
  • Any known risks relating to the case are reviewed in advance

During work

  • Professional boundaries are maintained at all times
  • Isolated or unsafe locations are avoided wherever possible
  • The worker positions themselves so a safe exit is always possible
  • Vehicle doors are kept locked when appropriate during transport
  • The worker trusts their instincts and withdraws from any situation that feels unsafe
  • Agreed contact and transport arrangements are followed without deviation

Staying in touch

  • Regular check-ins are kept with a designated person when necessary
  • A mobile phone or location-sharing technology is used where appropriate
  • Someone is always available to be contacted in case of concern or delay

In an emergency

  • 999 is called immediately if there is risk to life or safety
  • The safety of the child or vulnerable person comes first
  • The relevant safeguarding authority and/or referring professional is informed as soon as possible
  • A full incident report is completed

After work

  • Any concern, incident or near miss is recorded and reported
  • Risks are reflected on to improve future practice
  • Any follow-up action is completed promptly

Training and review

Safeguarding and lone working awareness is kept up to date, lone working procedures and risks are reviewed regularly, and this policy is updated in line with best practice and any change in legislation.

Reviewing this policy

This policy is reviewed annually, and sooner if a lone working incident occurs, if service delivery changes, or if guidance or legislation is updated. It was last reviewed in August 2026.
